I've been a musician and music fan for years but had never heard "Rumble" or even heard of Link Wray whene I heard those hauntingly brash chords of the song on a late night commercial for a CD of rock instrumentles in '99 or 2000. I sat up boltright in bed! Who is that? What is that? The commercial doesn't specificly say. But those chords stayed in my head. Just those first two chords(since that's all I heard in the commercial)was all I knew and I started just playing them now and then. One day while I was setting up for a gig with my band I strummed them while sound checking and asked my bass player if he knew what that was. He said "Yeah, that's Link Wray". The mystery was finally solved! Obviously I hadn't bought the TV CD but have since aquired a recording.That old record is a masterpiece! It may be simple but that's part of the beauty. It is pure naked rock stripped to the bone. I'd love to know what kind of guitar, amp, mike etc, was used. Thanks for letting me chime in. Austin. Humboldt County California.

In answer to your questions. The original Rumble was cut with a Gibson Les Paul played through a Premier tube amp and recorded mono in a small studio called US Recording in Washington DC. The amp is in a couple of photos in the Link Wray Days section of this page. I will be putting up a history page soon. Thanks for the posting! John.

One of the benefits of being a Link Wray fan is an awareness of many other wonderful rock guitarists and contributors to the language of rock and roll. Jack was certainly one of those individuals. I am saddened to learn of his passing. I am pleased,however,that there are plenty of great recordings of Jack, both with and without Link, for us to enjoy and hopefully additional recordings will be made available to the public in the future. In spite of the obvious difficulties, I hope the Fenderbenders band, as well as this website, can carry on and maintain the Fenderbenders' great tradition of rock and roll. Almost 8 years ago, I met John Van Horn. He became one of my closest friends. He was the one I turned to for advice, for help and for a guaranteed laugh. John was easy to talk to and trust. I treasure our many conversations. I will always cherish the times we spent laughing about RC cars crashing, CB personalities, the latest gossip or politics. I will greatly miss the neat stories he told me about his life. I will forever painfully miss my friend John. Thank you so much.

Hi, We just happened upon your website and we were very sad to learn that John had passed away last year. Gary met John and Jeannie while working as a deputy at the Falls Church Sheriff's Office about 10 years ago. John was a good man and will be missed by many. Doing a Google search on Link Wray and Comanche led me to you. I first met Link at a St. Bernadette's CYO dance (Silver Spring, MD) in the late 50's. It was Rawhide that led me to take up guitar. I played with the Marylanders, Carefrees, Profiles in the 60's. Still playing with Link's big hits in my repertiore. Best wishes.

i just love this one song that keeps playing on our "filtered music" station, finally heard it on REAL radio, it was a wild fun song w/a great beat and you can't help but get into it and laugh and I finally heard it was the Fender Benders and the orig. was done previous to the one the Fender Benders did in the 60's. I met Link Wray in Tuscon in 1972. He was recording at "Golden Tracks" studio. I was just a kid and my dad was friends with the Owner/Engineer - K.C. Link taught my sister and I how to fly paper airplanes one crazy Sunday afternoon. I'll never forget him and I always wanted to see him again and see if he remembered that. I saw your Link Wray section and many of those pictures, especially the ones of the "Three Track Days" I remember. Link had a big empty house in Tuscon at the time and in the dining room had a stack of sheet music that seemed to reach the ceiling. Hundreds and hundreds of songs and he'd just pull one off the pile and play and sing them.... I was in awe. If you know how I could drop Link a line, I'd sure appreciate an email.. Thanks, Rick

Link was a icon. As just a kid playing drums in San Antonio and sharing a stage with some big name stars from West Texas, one of whom was killed in a plane crash, I tended to focus on drummers-Link's drummer made the Rumble the hit it was as much as the holes Link made in the famous amp. Link is the hero but let's never forget the drummer's part.

Hi, Enjoy the site, but I believe I found two errors on your Link Wray page: The first error is a minor one. The image that you list as a "ticket" for the show that Rumble was first played at appears to be (and has a caption stating) that it is an ad. The second error (I believe) is that you state the show (as advertised) was in 1958. (Most references to the first time Rumble was played do state that it was in 1958). The "Official Site of Link Wray" at: www.linkwraylegend.com/bio.html (bio page) states this show took place in 1956. I believe this may also be wrong for the following reasons: 1. The date of the ad on your site is Friday July 12 (no year listed on ad). 2. Rumble was first released (Cadence single #1347) on March 31, 1958. (Usually listed as April, 1958.) 3. July 12 did not fall on a Friday between 1955 and 1960, except for in 1957. My thinking is either the ad is from 1957 and may, or may not be, for the show where Rumble was first played. Or, if it is for the show where Rumble was first played, then it must have been in 1957 and all references to Rumble being first played in 1958 are wrong.
